    There really is no talking to them. The front pages of some right-wing newspapers this morning are a journey into mania and psychosis. There is no sense of purchase in reality, no hint of the slightest moderation, no trace of reason. Keir Starmer has come back from Europe with a perfectly sensible plan.

    What a depressing day. This morning, Keir Starmer made it clear that he would be just as bad on immigration as the prime ministers who came before him. Of course, he sold this as a moment of change. In fact, it was confirmation of continuity. He evidently intends to follow the exact same approach as New Labour, and the Coalition, and the Brexiters: echoing the language of the far right and introducing new policies to make immigrants’ lives miserable.

    If these peace terms are as reported, they are a historic betrayal. Nothing in American history would come near to it. It would side the US squarely and definitively with dictatorship. It would mark the collapse of Western values across the Atlantic. You can write about this stuff over and over again. You can print page after page and commit sentence after sentence, but the cold reality of the words still strikes you like a slap to the face.

We should be experiencing a once-in-a-generation moment of reform. Instead, it’s dissolved in a pointless, juvenile shouting match of nothingness, just like it always does. A historic opportunity is being thrown away. Generally speaking, you get one chance for Lords reform every 30 to 40 years.
