    The number of pupils in England absent for long periods of time reached a record high last year, Government figures suggest. Department for Education (DfE) data indicates that 2.3% of pupils were "severely absent", which means they missed at least 50% of possible school sessions, in 2023/24, compared with 2.0% in 2022/23. Overall, 171,269 pupils were classed as severely absent last academic year, up from 150,256 in 2022/23.

    The areas of the UK where you're most likely to be off work sick have been revealed. The data has been released by the Department for Work and Pensions and is based on responses gathered from the Annual Population Survey and Labour Force Survey for 2024. It reveals the estimated percentage of the workforce who are economically inactive due to illness in every upper-tier local authority in England, as well as all council areas in Scotland and Wales.

    Health chiefs have issued a warning about a "potential second norovirus wave" with people having the vomiting bug more than once. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has stated that those who have already contracted the virus this winter could be at risk again because of changes in which strain is dominant. The organisation that monitors lab reports of the sickness bug, explained that having one type of norovirus does not fully protect against other strains.
