After not competing in club gymnastics for the first time last summer, Erik Van Leer wasn’t in peak form for the first half of the high school season. Now he’s back and ready for one last hurrah. The Evanston Township High School senior swept to victories in all but one event, including the all-around title, and led the Wildkits to a second straight team championship Tuesday night at the Niles Co-op Sectional meet sponsored by the Illinois High School Gymnastics Coaches Association.

Guy Downer, who bought Bennison’s Bakery from the Bennison family in 1967, turns 100 years old today, Jan. 9. Above, Downer is seen in January 2023 outside the bakery at 1000 Davis St. In the window is a photo of Downer’s son Jory, who joined the family-owned business in 1975 and heads the operation today. Blaine Downer, who is married to Guy Downer Jr. (Jory’s son and Guy Sr.’s grandson) messaged the RoundTable on Monday to alert us to the landmark birthday.

Many came in costume to run or walk the course along Sheridan Road and the Northwestern University lakefill. Below are more photos from the Thanksgiving Day event.
