    The Labour Party’s Peter Obi, who came third in the 2023 presidential election, riled up his political base over the weekend with a post on X praising former military leader Yakubu Gowon, who led the country during the Nigerian Civil War, in which about a million Igbos died. In the message on 19 October, Obi, an ethnic Igbo and former governor of the south-eastern state of Anambra, described Gowon as a leader who stood for love, peace and unity in times of hate, strife and division.
