A group of progressive activists say they are planning a push to put a measure on the D.C. ballot that, if approved by voters, would prohibit the 174-acre RFK site from being used for a new football stadium. I’ve been writing and reporting on the D.C. Council for years, and it’s easy to assume that everyone else has the same nerdy interest in our distinct legislative branch and the role it plays in governing our fair city. Many people have lives, though, so I’ll concede that deciphering the council’s processes and the sometimes convoluted path a bill takes to become a law isn’t what you might consider a fun weekday activity.

On Monday morning, crews got to work removing the "Black Lives Matter" mural from the streets in front of the White House — drilling into the 35-foot-tall yellow letters with a jackhammer and scraping the paint from the pavement. It only took years of pleading and an act of Congress, but the push to give D.C. more control over the old RFK Stadium site is now a done deal. During Tuesday’s monthly legislative session, the D.C. Council approved the city’s new 99-year lease with the federal government – the first step towards what many hope is new housing, retail, parks, and possibly a football stadium for the Washington Commanders on the 177-acre plot of land.
