Angered by the costs spent on the cleanup of the River Seine, which remains unswimmable, Parisians have suggested a unique form of protest. The River Seine has been a dumping ground for centuries, for all sorts of items and detritus; laundry suds, human waste, even animal parts tossed by mediaeval butchers. Swimming in it has been banned for a century. Of course we all know that now; with the Paris Olympics just a few weeks away, the cleanup has been the focus.

Mabo Day honours what progress we have made in the last 32 years toward Reconciliation. But more needs to be done – now, more than ever. It’s Mabo Day, and the final day of National Reconciliation Week 2024. 32 years ago today, Torres Strait Islander, Eddie Koiki Mabo, challenged the Australian legal system, and the doctrine of “terra nullius”.
