Alaska Gov. Mike Dunleavy this week vetoed two bipartisan bills, extending the list of legislation that he has quietly nixed during his tenure. One vetoed bill would have allowed the only state-operated high school in Alaska to compete for maintenance funding against other schools in the state, and another would have capped interest rates for payday loans in an effort to prevent predatory lending. If you have ever spent a summer day hiking to Williwaw Lakes, you have likely encountered turquoise alpine lakes, fields of wildflowers, dramatic views of snow-speckled peaks and — well — lots of mud. The trail offers some of the best views of Chugach State Park, but reaching the lakes has for years necessitated side-stepping or bushwhacking around several flooded sections of sludge. The Chugach Park Fund is changing that this summer with reroutes and a series of new bridges and boardwalks.
