    Northbound Interstate 5 was reduced to one lane near the interchange with Highway 22 in Salem Wednesday afternoon. The Oregon Department of Transportation said "hazardous materials" on the road had closed the other two lanes. Cleanup crews were on the way, ODOT said. Drivers were warned to expect delays for several hours and to watch for crews working in the area. Traffic appeared to be backed up on I-5 northbound all the way to Battle Creek Road.

    Micah Lee Blacksmith received three years probation for a fatal hit-and-run in West Salem, Oregon. Blacksmith pleaded guilty to failing to perform the duties of a driver to a seriously injured person. The victim, Steven Craig Bishop, died at the scene of the December 2024 crash. An Independence woman who turned herself in more than a month after a December 2024 fatal hit-and-run in West Salem was sentenced April 15 in Polk County Circuit Court to three years of supervised probation.

    A Sheridan man was arrested April 13 on numerous weapons-related charges with police seizing 17 firearms from his residence, the Yamhill County Sheriff's Office said. Sheriff's deputies responded to multiple reports of gunshots on April 13 in the 100 block of NW Richard Street in Sheridan and contacted the 51-year-old man, who denied discharging a firearm within city limits, police said. That evening, deputies were dispatched again in response to a 911 hang-up call.

    An Albany man was sentenced on April 1 to 2⅟₂ years in prison for assaulting multiple corrections deputies in the Polk County Jail. Ivan Rosalio Mendez-Perez, 31, was indicted on March 21, 2024, with assaulting a public safety officer, two charges of attempted assault of a public safety officer, third-degree sexual abuse, and second-degree bias crime. The charges stem from a March 14, 2024, altercation Mendez-Perez had with corrections deputies.

    A Troutdale man died April 12 in a single vehicle crash on Highway 22E near Detroit, Oregon State Police said. OSP responded to the crash at about 3:35 p.m. on April 12, police said. OSP said a preliminary investigation found an eastbound Ford F-150 driven by Kasey John Fox, 40, was travelling at a high speed when it crossed the center line, hit the westbound guardrail, crossed back into the eastbound lane, left the shoulder and hit several trees.
