Police have arrested a man in connection with a stabbing at a mission in Salem, Oregon that left 11 people injured on June 1. Salem Police responded to the stabbing incident at Union Gospel Mission of Salem north of downtown at about 7:15 p.m. on June 1. Almost a dozen people were taken to Salem Health hospital with various injuries,, and a male suspect, who was not identified, was arrested, police said. The mission is a faith-based organization on the front lines of the homelessness crisis.

The Oregon Beach Monitoring Program has begun its 2025 season along the Oregon Coast. OBMP, part of the Oregon Health Authority's public health division, monitors the busiest beaches in the state where bacteria has been found or where local partners and the public have requested monitoring. The season runs until mid-September. The Department of Environmental Quality regularly tests water at each of the beaches for fecal bacteria. OHA issues an advisory if levels are elevated and unsafe.

This story has been updated to include additional information Salem Police responded to a stabbing incident involving 11 people at Union Gospel Mission of Salem north of downtown on the evening of June 1. Police responded to the UGM at 777 Commercial St. NE at about 7:15 p.m. Police spokesperson Angela Hedrick said 11 people were taken to Salem Health hospital with various injuries. Police arrested a male suspect but have not named the man.

A Salem man was sentenced May 20 to 10 years in prison for shooting and killing a man on New Year's Day in 2024. Julio Sanchez-Sanchez, 38, pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of first-degree manslaughter and unlawful use of a weapon for killing Ricardo Lopez-Cruz, 29. Sanchez-Sanchez was arrested Jan. 3, 2024, after he turned himself in to Roseburg Police Department. He was originally charged with second-degree murder. Salem Police responded to a call at 3:13 a.m. Jan.

The Oregon Youth Authority hired a new superintendent for MacLaren Youth Correctional Facility in Woodburn, the agency announced May 30. Troy Britting, who has served as interim superintendent, was hired as the new superintendent after a national recruitment process, the agency said. Former superintendent Dan Berger stepped down as superintendent Oct. 1, 2024. He remained on staff as a special advisor before retiring at the end of the year, spokesperson Will Howell said.
