Residents in La Palma, one of Orange County’s smallest cities, continue to demand video live streaming access for city council meetings to make it easier to engage with local government from home. Of the 34 cities in Orange County, only La Palma and Rancho Santa Margarita provide audio-only access to their council meetings. Every other city in the county offers video live streaming with playback.

Residents are raising concerns that a new policy in Fullerton is designed to censor bloggers and reporters who write articles critical of local politicians and violates freedom of speech rights. On Tuesday, Fullerton City Council Members voted 4-1 in support of a new policy that would ban materials not produced by the government – like community newspapers – from being placed in nearly all city facilities except a certain part of the library.

Elijah Jones from Alumni Hall was elected to serve as judicial council president at Wednesday’s student senate meeting. He will replace Hunter Brooke, who resigned in December to avoid impeachment. After a 28-page bill of impeachment was circulated to senators, alleging misconduct and unethical conduct, Brooke resigned from his role as judicial council president on Dec. 11, avoiding what would have been his second impeachment hearing before the senate.

Two major fires – the Eaton and Palisades fires – have burned more than 12,000 structures and continue to rip through Los Angeles county amidst containment efforts. At least 25 individuals have died in the blazes and more than have been displaced as of Monday morning. Orange County is currently under a red flag fire warning and wind advisory from the National Weather Service until Wednesday night.

Stanton officials are set to consider adding a paid Vietnamese community liaison position to the city in an effort to bridge access to services and resources for Vietnamese residents. At the Dec. 10 meeting, city council members unanimously voted to direct staff to research establishing the new position and come back with details at a future meeting.

A new traffic signal will be located at the entrance of the Anderson Parking Structure along Walnut Avenue, in an effort to increase safety and decrease traffic congestion. Harold Hewitt, executive vice president and chief operating officer, said the decision to install a new traffic light was largely in response to neighbors’ frustrations about traffic and dangerous drivers.

On Tuesday University of Notre Dame’s Student Union Board welcomed Hollywood actress, music artist and Broadway star Elizabeth Gillies to the stage in a student-led panel in DeBartolo Hall. Gillies appeared on the hit shows “Victorious” and “Dynasty.”Gillies was introduced and subsequently engaged in a dialogue led by students Jamil Allan and Jasmine Williams, both of whom are members of the Student Union Board.

Chapman met Jennifer West on Nov. 12 in a town hall format where West spoke about her credentials, experience and what she would like to implement at Chapman. West started her career as a professor in biomedical engineering when it was a completely new department at Rice University. She said this was an influential experience that gave her an advantage in navigating uncharted territory. “It was great to build something from nothing,” she said.
