Santa Ana Unified school board members could lay off almost 300 teachers, counselors, coaches and social workers at the end of the school year as district officials wrestle with a roughly $180 million budget deficit. The potential layoffs in one of Orange County’s largest school districts comes as public education leaders struggle with dwindling federal COVID bailout funds and declining enrollment at public schools across OC and the country.

Two major fires – the Eaton and Palisades fires – have burned more than 12,000 structures and continue to rip through Los Angeles county amidst containment efforts. At least 25 individuals have died in the blazes and more than have been displaced as of Monday morning. Orange County is currently under a red flag fire warning and wind advisory from the National Weather Service until Wednesday night.

Mercedes Alvarenga, a third-year child development major, was having a conversation with a friend. The dull exchange was going effortlessly, shifting from one banal topic to another. In the midst of this discussion, a comment dropped like stone in a tranquil pond. “You’re so crazy, you're acting bipolar,” Alvarenga’s friend said. Alvarenga, who is diagnosed with bipolar disorder, felt a pang of discomfort hearing that from a friend, since her diagnosis wasn’t unbeknownst to them.

In a tumultuous session amid audience outbursts on Tuesday, Fullerton City Council elected Nick Dunlap as mayor and Fred Jung as mayor pro tem. It is Dunlap’s first time serving as mayor and Jung’s first time serving as mayor pro tem. “I realize, while this is a largely ceremonial role and responsibility, I want to thank Fullerton voters and members of the city council for their trust and confidence in putting me here because it’s an honor to serve,” Dunlap said.
