KARACHI: An anti-terrorism court on Saturday remanded a suspect in police custody in a case pertaining to the abduction and murder of a youth in the Defence Housing Authority. Mustafa Amir was from the DHA on Jan 6 and two weeks later his family had received a ransom call. During the course of investigation, the police arrested victim’s friend Armaghan after a shoot-out, but could not get his physical remand from court for questioning.
SHC dismisses petition against breastfeeding law

KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) has dismissed a petition challenging the Sindh Protection and Promotion of Breast-Feeding and Young Child Nutrition Act, 2023. A two-judge bench comprising Justice Muhammad Junaid Ghaffar and Justice Mohammad Abdur Rahman ruled that the petition was misconceived and untenable. Regarding the alleged refusal of the governor to give assent to the law, the bench noted that the governor has 10 days to either grant assent or return a bill with objections.

KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Monday ruled that its constitutional benches do not have the same powers and jurisdictions as enjoyed by its parent constitutional high court, or regular benches. The 38-page detailed judgement came on 14 petitions filed by various industrial and commercial units challenging the competence of legislation to impose a surcharge on electricity under Section 31(8) of the NEPRA Act, 1997.

KARACHI: One of the nine members of the newly formed constitutional bench of the Sindh High Court has recused himself from becoming part of it, arguing that the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) should have constituted the bench on a seniority basis. Had he not opted to recuse, Justice Omar Sial would also have been part of a three-member committee that decides fixation of cases before the SHC constitutional bench.

KARACHI: A sessions court on Saturday granted bail to three policemen in a case pertaining to the death of a suspect in police lock-up. Former SP-Clifton Nayyar ul Haq, Darakhshan SHO Ali Raza Leghari, Sub-Inspector Sanaullah Soomro and head moharrir Faisal Leghari have been booked in a case pertaining to the custodial death of Moiz Naseem, who was found dead in the lock-up of the Darakhshan police station in April and an autopsy said that he was tortured to death. The SP is already on bail.
