The trial within a trial in the R255 million asbestos roof removal case has been postponed to Wednesday in the Free State High Court, after a state witness fell ill last week and is still unwell today. Judge Phillip Loubser was expected to deliver a ruling on whether other defence lawyers in the case can cross-examine the state witness.

Thabure Unit Commander Brigadier, SP Kubheka says Constables Keamogetswe Buys and Cebekhulu Linda had special skills necessary for the division when they joined it last year in July. He spoke at a joint memorial service for three constables, whose bodies were retrieved from the Hennops River in Centurion, Pretoria last week. Kubheka says Buys was placed at the Cyber Unit because of her IT qualifications, while Linda, whose father was a former police officer, was placed in security intelligence.

The South African Police Union (SAPU) in the Free State has described the loss of three constables as a sad day for the union. Speaking at the official memorial service in Bloemfontein, SAPU second vice president Peter Ntsime says the death of constables Boipelo Senoge, Keamogetswe Buys and Cebekhulue Linda is still hard to accept. Their remains were retrieved from the Hennops River in Centurion, Gauteng, after they went missing on the 23rd of April.

Free State Premier MaQueen Letsoha-Mathae has given the assurance that government will ensure that the three police Constables whose bodies were retrieved from the Hennops River in Centurion are given a fitting send-off. She was present at a mortuary in Bloemfontein on Sunday when the bereaved families received the bodies of the officers. The families had earlier fetched the bodies from the Pretoria Central Mortuary and conducted traditional rituals at the scene of the crash.

The asbestos roof removal saga resumes tomorrow with a trial within a trial to test the court’s jurisdiction to try Moroadi Cholota who is accused 17 in the matter. Trial Judge Phillip Loubser granted Cholota, who is the former personal assistant of the then Free State Premier Ace Magashule, an opportunity to ventilate her claims that her extradition was unlawful.
