The South African government says it has noted with a great deal of anxiety the entry by the United States into the Israel-Iran war. President Cyril Ramaphosa has called on all involved in the conflict to pursue efforts at dialogue to end the war. This follows Trump’s statement that the US has completed a successful attack on three nuclear sites in Iran yesterday morning. Presidential spokesperson Vincent Magwenya says Pretoria will support peace talks initiatives.

The South African government has welcomed the release of two South African nationals from detention in Equatorial Guinea. This release follows the granting of clemency by the President of Equatorial Guinea. Peter Shane Huxham and Frederic Potgieter are engineers in the oil and gas industry. They were arrested in February of 2023 and subsequently sentenced to 12 years’ imprisonment. They were convicted on drug-related charges with a staggering R93 million fine each.

President Cyril Ramaphosa says there should be sufficient funding for the after effects of climate change, such as floods. Ramaphosa wrapped up his working visit in Kananaskis, Canada, yesterday, where he attended the G7 Summit Outreach Session. He says he was able to engage the G7 leaders on South Africa’s readiness to host the G20 Leaders’ Summit later this year. Zimbabwe’s former Foreign Affairs Minister, Doctor Walter Mzembi, has been arrested. He will appear in the Harare Magistrate’s Court today. State media reports say Mzembi was arrested on Friday. He appeared in court briefly, and the matter was postponed to today. Mzembi held a brief and private meeting with President Emmerson Mnangagwa before the arrest. Mzembi fled Zimbabwe after the overthrow of the late Robert Mugabe in 2017 and has been living in exile.

The third batch of South African National Defence Force (SANDF) troops from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is expected to land at the Waterkloof Air Force Base in Pretoria today. Two hundred and forty-nine SANDF members have undergone demobilisation at the Tempe military base in Bloemfontein. The soldiers are set to return to their base camps today. This follows their arrival from the DRC on Friday.
