    BEIJING/SHENZHEN -- A 10-year-old boy stabbed in Shenzhen on his way to a Japanese school has died, Japan's government said on Thursday, confirming the worst fears about an attack that has heightened anxiety across the Japanese community in China. Japan's Consulate-General in Guangzhou, which provides services in Shenzhen, announced that the boy had died early in the morning, despite emergency surgery and other attempts to save his life.

    BEIJING/SHENZHEN -- A knife attack on a 10-year-old boy in Shenzhen just months after a similar incident in Suzhou has heightened anxiety among the Japanese community in China. The child was stabbed by a 44-year-old man around 8 a.m. on Wednesday, according to Shenzhen authorities. The attack took place on a sidewalk about 200 meters from a Japanese school attended by the boy. The child was accompanied by a parent, who was not injured.

    GUANGZHOU -- Huawei Technologies' new trifold smartphone, to be released Friday, is popping up on online marketplaces at more than double the list price before it even hits the market, as Chinese tech fans scramble to get their hands on the difficult-to-produce device. Preorders for the Mate XT on Huawei's homepage alone topped 5 million as of Wednesday afternoon. A sales representative at a Huawei store in Guangzhou said it would be available there no sooner than February or March.

    GUANGZHOU -- Chinese telecom equipment supplier Huawei Technologies' new tri-fold smartphone attracted orders from roughly 1.3 million people within seven hours after the start of reservations. The official site began accepting orders for the Mate XT at 12:08 p.m. Saturday. The product will be unveiled on Tuesday Chinese time, soon after Apple is expected to show off the iPhone 16 on Monday in the U.S.
