BEIJING -- A top Japanese foreign affairs official demanded a clear explanation for the stabbing death of a 10-year-old Japanese boy in Shenzhen last week, including the suspect's motive, in a meeting with his Chinese counterpart on Monday. "It is extremely important to clarify the motive for the crime," Yoshifumi Tsuge, a state minister for foreign affairs, said during the meeting with Sun Weidong, Chinese vice foreign minister. BEIJING/SHENZHEN -- A 10-year-old boy stabbed in Shenzhen on his way to a Japanese school has died, Japan's government said on Thursday, confirming the worst fears about an attack that has heightened anxiety across the Japanese community in China. Japan's Consulate-General in Guangzhou, which provides services in Shenzhen, announced that the boy had died early in the morning, despite emergency surgery and other attempts to save his life.

BEIJING/SHENZHEN -- A knife attack on a 10-year-old boy in Shenzhen just months after a similar incident in Suzhou has heightened anxiety among the Japanese community in China. The child was stabbed by a 44-year-old man around 8 a.m. on Wednesday, according to Shenzhen authorities. The attack took place on a sidewalk about 200 meters from a Japanese school attended by the boy. The child was accompanied by a parent, who was not injured.

BEIJING -- China resumed imports of Taiwanese pomelos on Monday, days after announcing plans to allow Fujian residents to travel to the nearby Taiwan-administered Kinmen Island. China's Ministry of Culture and Tourism had announced Friday the lifting of the travel restriction, citing the request of a Kinmen delegation. The delegation, which included Taiwanese opposition Kuomintang lawmaker Chen Yu-jen, had met with Song Tao, director of China's Taiwan Affairs Office, in Beijing on Aug. 22.
