The Democratic Alliance (DA) has called on government to immediately establish an inquiry into the illegal mining crisis at a disused mine in Stilfontein in the North West. This comes as the court-ordered government-led rescue operations concluded after all the illegal miners were reported to have been brought to the surface. This week, a total of 246 illegal miners were brought to the resurface and 78 bodies were retrieved.

North West Acting Police Commissioner Patrick Asaneng has confirmed that all the illegal miners at the Buffelsfontein mine in Stilfontein have been successfully evacuated. On Monday, police in the province along with mine rescue services, entered the third and final phase to retrieve illegal miners. The General Industries Workers Union of South Africa (Giwusa) has defined the Stilfontein saga, as a post-apartheid massacre, that has even surpassed Marikana. The government-led retrieval operation resulted in the retrieval of 246 illegal miners and 78 bodies between Monday and yesterday. Prior to this, a community-led operation retrieved over 1 000 illegal miners and nine bodies.
