Really couldn't believe it. So said Dirk Nowitzki last Friday in his first official statement in response to the big trade made by his beloved Dallas Mavericks. A trade stunner that turned Lakerland into Lukaland. Amazon's newly signed NBA studio analyst for next season pretty much summed things up perfectly. Even three full weeks and change later, Nowitzki speaks for a lot of people both based in Dallas and far, far beyond.

If you opted to skip the Mavericks’ preseason and wait for Thursday’s season opener against San Antonio, I can’t blame you. Stars rarely play; Luka Dončić missed all of the action with a minor calf injury, and Kyrie Irving only participated in two halves across four games. BUCHAREST, Romania — The dateline is real. Incredibly surreal for yours truly, too. For the first time in my life, I landed Tuesday evening in Romania. This is just a way-too-short stopover on an incredible basketball experience that I am soon to partake in, but I knew from the jump that the trip to come later this week (more when/where/why details, once again, are forthcoming) would put me as close as I've ever been in sheer distance terms to my parents' birthplace.

The NBA Finals are tough. The adrenaline and joy of making it to the biggest stage for the first time in 13 years and only the third time in franchise history can fade quickly when you fall into a 2-0 hole against one of the best all-around teams in recent memory.
