BackgroundAt the start of 2023, in those bleak January days where you get about 14 minutes of daylight each day, I faced a dilemma. The Outlaw Orchestra had a really busy 2022 with a pretty gruelling festival schedule followed by intensive recording and promo for an EP and single releases over the autumn and winter. In those early months of 2023, we were enjoying a bit of downtime. But right at that moment, I hit a real creative seam.

David Barr’s debut single, ‘Monday’s Rain’ showcases an exciting up and coming songwriter with an ability to craft infectious vocal lines and tight radio-friendly soundscapes. The former frontman of Moon Kids, Barr delves into the pulsating heart of indie’s counterculture roots, crafting a sound that borrows from brit-pop as much as it does pop and alternative-rock.

New York rock and roll outfit SUSU have returned with the final track ‘Turnt’, taken off their album ‘Call Susie’ which is out now. Following the critical success of their recent singles ‘Dark Angel’, ‘Come and Get Some Me’, ‘Die Inside’, ‘Waiting’, ‘Rubber Hits The Road’ and ‘MINE’, ‘Turnt’ channels a heady dose of raucous gospel tinged rock and roll with nods to Tina Turner, The Black Keys, X-Ray Spex and Big Joanie.

Celebrated for their theatrical and energetic live performances, they have a distinct visual style that combines gothic and punk imagery, often incorporating storytelling and narrative elements into their music and overall aesthetic. Their recent album release, ‘Sanguivore,’ while unmistakably Creeper, represents a deliberate shift in both sound and image.

So much more than an afterthought or a ragbag of out-takes, here we have an addendum that stands on its own and speaks for itself. New Amsterdam Records–8.7Percussionist and producer Ben Sloan’s decade plus as collaborator and contributor, drumming with the likes of Moses Sumney, Beth Orton, WHY? and The National, testifies that here we have a musician with an exceptional range, pedigree and rhythmic sixth sense. Still that’s not the whole picture.

The annual Party in the Paddock Festival in lutruwita/Tasmania has announced the most extraordinary line up for 2024 – and this is just the first round. While the international guest list is impressive, what I find most exciting is the number of local acts that have been drafted in (many of who we have covered here at Backseat Mafia).

Here’s someone to keep an eye on for next year: if you’ve heard of Black Polish already you’ll definitely know what’s up, but if not, it’s the solo project of Jayden Binnix from Maryland. They’ve put out a clutch of singles this year already, following on from 2021’s excellent OUT OF PLACE EP, not to mention announced their debut album is arriving in January.
