There was a time in the bygone eras of the Game Boy and Super Nintendo when Mana was a prestigious series. The original Mana game, Final Fantasy Adventure in North America (and Mystic Quest in Europe), was a marvel on the Game Boy. Secret of Mana was a star of the action RPG genre, and the Japan-only Seiken Densetsu 3 (now known as Trials of Mana in English) held an almost mythical status to those of us outside of its home country.

Who had the majestic return of the Mana series on their 2024 bingo card? I certainly didn’t. And yet, I’ve spent nearly eight hours with Visions of Mana, and I couldn’t be happier with its direction. Visions of Mana is Mana at its utmost, a game oozing with charm, vibrancy, and an underlying melancholy. The early hours of Visions of Mana catalogue the journey of the Soul Guard, Val, and his ever-growing entourage of Alms.

Square Enix recently published the long-awaited newest entry in the SaGa franchise, SaGa Emerald Beyond. Alongside our SaGa Emerald Beyond review, which noted the game’s strengths in combat design and unique flavor in story presentation, we had the opportunity to interact with two key staff for this game. One of them is SaGa series creator Akitoshi Kawazu, who served as director and lead writer for SaGa Emerald Beyond. The other is Tomokazu Shibata, who served as the combat designer for this game.

SaGa is one of the longest-running RPG series out there. Many fans claim the 36-year-old Final Fantasy II is the first game in the series, one of its lead designers being SaGa series creator Akitoshi Kawazu. The first SaGa game (known as The Final Fantasy Legend in North America) came out for the Game Boy only one year later.
