A groundbreaking ceremony was held this past Friday for the reimagined Park Along the River. Some site preparation work had been done and now the updates and new features can be added. Funding the initial phase of park improvements is being funded with a $2 million grant from the Mississippi Outdoor Stewardship Trust, but the seed was planted 30 years ago.

National Weather Service officials were still evaluating storm damage in Union County this past week but local EMA Director Curt Clayton said it appeared four tornados struck the county – three verified by trained spotters and one by radar. He said the storm was tentatively being categorized as an F-2 when it was over the Thaxton area, reducing to F-1 and then F-0 as it moved through the county. He said 74 homes were damaged, two of which were destroyed.

The Union County Development Association brought Dr. Ben Carson to New Albany this past week, drawing the largest crowd for a similar event in memory. UCDA Coordinator Jan Cossitt said she wanted to do something that would bring the organization’s name to people’s attention. The Magnolia Theatre will present “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe,” a story popular with children and adults alike, Thursday through Sunday this week.
