The strike previously forced 36 U.S. ports along the East and Gulf Coasts to close in October 2024 with disruptions across domestic and international supply chains. The ILA walked away from negotiations over port automation and it recently threatened to strike again if demands are not met. There will be another strike if parties do not reach a deal.

The International Longshoremen’s Association (“ILA”) ended a three-day strike at certain East Coast and Gulf Ports until January 15, 2024. If a new contract is not finalized with the U.S. Maritime Alliance (“USMX”) then another strike remains on the table as an option. If there is new disruption then swift action will be required for domestic U.S. importers and exporters, as well as their service providers, to reduce supply chain interruption for import and export traffic.

Global transportation and logistics services can amount to some of the largest expenses, and even the largest single contracts by spend, for enterprises with high traffic volumes. Among mature buyers and sellers of goods the common practice is to contract for services rather than buying on the spot market under ad hoc supplier paperwork. Contracting under one’s own templates is both permitted under the applicable legal regimes and also a sensible approach to supply chain management.
