Likely the artist’s final work, this 16th-century painting is a vast, darkly burnished depiction of Christ’s death that is suffused with grief. Starting in the 1510s, when he was likely not yet 30 years old, Titian developed a style that used rich colors and striking dynamism to enliven the new medium of oil painting. He became Venice’s, indeed Europe’s, most celebrated artist, and then, some four decades later, that style began to break down.
