    STREATOR – Bottom-of-the-order production is a calling card of winning softball teams. It won the Marquette Crusaders their 14th game of the season Wednesday. No. 8 hitter Lily Brewer and No. 9 batter Kinley Rick combined for four of the visiting Crusaders’ seven hits, two of their four runs and both of the seventh-inning RBIs that proved vital in a 4-3, nonconference victory over the Streator Bulldogs at the SHS Athletic Fields.

    Ottawa 4, Morris 3: At King Field in Ottawa on Wednesday, the host Pirates won their sixth straight and improved to 9-2 overall, 2-0 in the Interstate 8 Conference with the victory. Adelynn Russell (7 IP, 1 ER, 7 K) notched the complete-game pitching win, supported by an offense paced by leadoff hitter Piper Lewis (two singles, RBI), Bobbi Snook (double, RBI) and Kilah Figenbaum (single, RBI).

    STREATOR – The Coal City baseball team was presented a couple opportunities for a big innings early in Monday’s Illinois Central Eight Conference visit to Streator, and the Coalers took advantage. The host Bulldogs, when given the same opportunities in the middle innings, did not.

    Russ Witte surprised the area’s boys basketball scene late last week with the announcement of his retirement as Seneca High School’s varsity head boys basketball coach. He also surprised the the players in his program when he told them Wednesday. “It was one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do,” Witte said. “Lot of tears shed on both sides.”Witte has been Seneca’s head coach since taking over for hall of fame coach Doug Evans in 2009.

    Capturing 111 out of 206 total votes cast in an online poll, Marquette baseball’s Griffin Dobberstein is The Times Athlete of the Week. The defending Class 1A state champs had a big week, and that included Dobberstein’s three-hit, six-RBI performance in a 16-1 handling of Woodland/Flanagan-Cornell to finish the series sweep. Also on the ballot last week were runner-up Addie Scherer (Earlville softball), Weston Averkamp (Ottawa boys track and field) and Ayla Covalsky (Ottawa girls soccer).
