STREATOR – Bottom-of-the-order production is a calling card of winning softball teams. It won the Marquette Crusaders their 14th game of the season Wednesday. No. 8 hitter Lily Brewer and No. 9 batter Kinley Rick combined for four of the visiting Crusaders’ seven hits, two of their four runs and both of the seventh-inning RBIs that proved vital in a 4-3, nonconference victory over the Streator Bulldogs at the SHS Athletic Fields.

Ottawa 4, Morris 3: At King Field in Ottawa on Wednesday, the host Pirates won their sixth straight and improved to 9-2 overall, 2-0 in the Interstate 8 Conference with the victory. Adelynn Russell (7 IP, 1 ER, 7 K) notched the complete-game pitching win, supported by an offense paced by leadoff hitter Piper Lewis (two singles, RBI), Bobbi Snook (double, RBI) and Kilah Figenbaum (single, RBI).

STREATOR – The Coal City baseball team was presented a couple opportunities for a big innings early in Monday’s Illinois Central Eight Conference visit to Streator, and the Coalers took advantage. The host Bulldogs, when given the same opportunities in the middle innings, did not.

Russ Witte surprised the area’s boys basketball scene late last week with the announcement of his retirement as Seneca High School’s varsity head boys basketball coach. He also surprised the the players in his program when he told them Wednesday. “It was one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do,” Witte said. “Lot of tears shed on both sides.”Witte has been Seneca’s head coach since taking over for hall of fame coach Doug Evans in 2009.

Capturing 111 out of 206 total votes cast in an online poll, Marquette baseball’s Griffin Dobberstein is The Times Athlete of the Week. The defending Class 1A state champs had a big week, and that included Dobberstein’s three-hit, six-RBI performance in a 16-1 handling of Woodland/Flanagan-Cornell to finish the series sweep. Also on the ballot last week were runner-up Addie Scherer (Earlville softball), Weston Averkamp (Ottawa boys track and field) and Ayla Covalsky (Ottawa girls soccer).

Russ Witte announces retirement as Seneca boys basketball coach

SENECA – The storied Seneca boys basketball program has had only two head coaches stretching back into the early 1980s. Soon, there will be a third. Russ Witte, who took over the Fighting Irish program in 2009 and led Seneca to a 284-188 record and three Class 2A regional championships over 16 seasons, announced to his players Wednesday he will be retiring as a basketball coach at the school. He does plan to stay on as a teacher.

Somonauk/Leland 30, Mendota 29: At Somonauk on Wednesday, the host Bobcats survived an early candidate for wildest game of the 2025 season as they and the visiting Trojans combined for 59 runs scored (fifth in Illinois history, per the IHSA website) on 53 hits, 14 walks and nine errors. Somonauk/Leland (2-6) scored 10 in the fifth to take the lead and added 12 in the bottom of the sixth after Mendota scored 11 in the top half.

RURAL STREATOR – After the first three innings of Tuesday’s Tri-County Conference visit by St. Bede to the Woodland/Flanagan-Cornell Warriors, it seemed it might take 20 runs to win what was projecting to be a back-and-forth softball shootout. Things settled down after a hectic start, however, until the visiting Bruins rang up a handful of insurance runs late to record a comfortable but competitive 11-5 victory to open a TCC series scheduled to conclude Thursday at the Academy.

RURAL STREATOR – “Once a Woodland Warrior, always a Woodland Warrior.”That motto at the small school a few miles south of Streator is being proven true again this spring, with 2021 Woodland graduate Sydnee Plesko taking over the Woodland/Flanagan-Cornell softball program as head coach after serving as an assistant last spring.
