This bag dump station includes vacuum-assisted lifting to reduce exertion and reduce bending/twisting tasks. Manual handling methods and mechanical feeders may have once provided an economical solution for loading packaging equipment, but such methods can become stumbling blocks on packaging lines.

The current NFPA combustible dusts standards—61 (Food), 484 (Metals), 652 (Fundamentals), 654 (Chemical), 655 (Sulphur), and 664 (Wood)) remain in effect and should be used for interpreting current appropriate combustible dust hazards and related situations. Except for NFPA 652, each of these standards is considered a “commodity-specific or industry-specific” standard. NFPA 652 is still the fundamentals (of combustible dust) standard.

All images courtesy of Key TechnologyMany food processors and packers have traditionally relied on belt conveyors to transport bulk and packaged product on their production lines, in part because low capital costs make these conveyors seem so affordable. However, when ongoing maintenance and sanitation costs are factored in, the affordability equation shifts in favor of other conveyor types.

When food industry producers that process and package dry particulates are ready to upgrade their conveyor systems, decisions are best made after products are thoroughly tested to optimize both quality and production. This practical “measure twice, cut once” approach is rapidly becoming an industry best practice for handling powder and bulk materials.
