I just spent a week in Carlsbad, Calif., visiting many of golf’s leading equipment manufacturers, and let me tell you…this summer is going to be epic for golf club releases. I know, it’s weird to think about the summer as an active time for gear drops. January is usually dominated by metalwood releases, and lately late-summer or fall have been reserved for iron launches.

In a surprising twist, TaylorMade is taking its previously Tour-only MG proto wedge (that was released last month at the Memorial) and releasing it to the public in limited quantities. The company announced the exclusive release of the new wedge in two grinds on their website and confirmed a few details about the prototype, which was added to five players’ bags in its first week on Tour.

While the defining shot of J.J. Spaun’s U.S. Open victory was undoubtedly his clutch tee shot at the 71st to drive the green and set up the go-ahead birdie, the most fitting memorable came a hole later with the putter.

J.J. Spaun’s 64-foot birdie putt on the 72nd green at Oakmont wasn’t just historic because it won him the U.S. Open. With the two-shot victory after a gritty back-nine 32 in brutal conditions, Spaun becomes the first player to win a men’s major championship with a zero torque putter, an L.A.B. Golf DF3. Zero torque putters, which have rapidly gained popularity on the PGA Tour over the past few seasons, are designed to resist twisting through the putting stroke, allowing the face to stay square.

For 14 years, one Bettinardi was running the show at Bettinardi Golf, but things changed when founder Bob Bettinardi‘s son, Sam, was ready to join the company. On this week’s episode of GOLF’s Fully Equipped, both Bettinardis discussed their father-son relationship and how it has benefited their family company over the past decade-plus. Sam joined the company in 2013 and Bob said the first six years were about him learning the ropes.

Great explainer on what makes good questions in a sports presser here

Kevin Van Valkenburg
Kevin Van Valkenburg @KVanValkenburg

I would actually disagree strongly with your characterization. A good question is not a performance. A good question puts an onus on the subject to speak his own words, not agree w/ the premise. "What happened?" & "Why?" are not lazy questions. They're fair Q's w/o ego or agenda.

J.J. Spaun not only won his first major at the U.S. Open, but it was also the first major for @labgolfputters and zero torque putters https://t.co/3KXL7XMmx3

Some big golf news: Three sources tell me the PGA Tour is expected to “sunset” Jay Monahan as commissioner after a transition period with new CEO Brian Rolapp. Monahan could leave his post as soon as the end of this year, and as late as the end of next, sources said.
