SAVOY, Ill. (WCIA) — The Village of Savoy held an annual Board of Trustees meeting Wednesday night, and one topic in particular was brought up again during public comment. Back in October, the village previously approved $364,000 to study and create a design to improve Colbert Park. They used 500 survey responses from the community to add a skate park and trail into the proposal. But Nick Clegg of Savoy told the board the survey doesn’t accurately represent the wants of the majority.

CHAMPAIGN COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) — Tuesday night, kids with disabilities got to learn from some of the best coaches around at the Challenger Baseball League. It was Illini Night at the park. This meant coaches from the University of Illinois helped out as “buddies” to the players. Athletic Director Josh Whitman, along with nearly 30 coaches from campus, showed up. “It’s just an incredible night for all of us,” Whitman said.

CHAMPAIGN-URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — An Urbana man has been charged with a hate crime that occurred on the University of Illinois campus after a month of erratic behavior. On Wednesday, 39-year-old Tyler Kirkwood was arrested by the University of Illinois Police Department, and the Champaign County State Attorney’s Office charged him with a hate crime. It came after an Asian student on U of I’s campus claims he was chased and threatened with violence this week.

MAHOMET, Ill. (WCIA) — At Thursday night’s meeting, the Champaign County Zoning Board of Appeals decided to continue the case about the proposed Mahomet solar farm project into later this summer. The proposed solar farm would see 36 acres of a nearby farm field close to a Mahomet neighborhood used for a solar energy farm. The project is seeking a recommendation from the board to then be passed onto the Environmental Land Use Committee, but now they’ll need to wait.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — Champaign School district had their third special meeting to decide the future of the superintendent went sideways after yelling, tense moments, and a near fight all happened within two hours. Tonight’s agenda only had two items on it — and both pertained to the future of Superintendent Sheila Boozer. It also was the third special meeting this month for the new board — and it quickly became one of the rowdiest yet.
