The failure of the Democratic Party in 2025 is so deep, so multifaceted, and so all-encompassing that it can be difficult to get your arms around. It’s like if every organ in your body went kaput one after the other, or every room in your house suddenly sprung a leak. How can you even begin to figure out the biggest issue when the entire structure is collapsing? Sometimes, though, the universe provides you with, if not the one and only answer, then at least a very handy distillation of the problem.

Over the weekend, ICE agents arrested Mahmoud Khalil, a permanent resident of the United States who helped lead the student movement for Palestine at Columbia University last year. His wife is eight months pregnant with their child. As Zeteo’s Prem Thakker reported, the arrest—or, more accurately, kidnapping—had all the hallmarks of the Gestapo-like tactics we’ve come to expect from ICE:“He has a green card,” an agent apparently said on the phone, confused by the matter.

On Sunday night, the Oscars did something they don’t always do: gave an award to a good movie. No Other Land, a film about Israel’s destruction of Masafer Yatta, a Palestinian village in the occupied West Bank, won the Oscar for Best Documentary. No Other Land is a beautiful, humane, enraging work that captures the everyday obscenity of Israeli apartheid and occupation. The fact that it won the Oscar is faintly astonishing.

You probably recognize the creepy skeleton grinning in the picture above this paragraph. It’s your pal and mine, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer, at the New York City Pride parade last year. Chuck LOVES going to Pride! Here he is way back in 2001. And staring kind of menacingly at the camera in 2007……And in 2019. Look how happy!Schumer loves Pride so much that he picked a picture of himself at the parade as his Twitter picture.
