A Pinellas jury began deliberating Monday morning in the case of a Tampa motorcyclist accused of killing a 13-year-old boy at a street racing event in St. Petersburg. Carlos Fernandez, 23, faces felony charges of vehicular homicide, culpable negligence manslaughter and reckless driving causing serious bodily harm, as well as two misdemeanor charges: street racing and operating a motorcycle without an endorsement.

When a motorcyclist struck and killed a 13-year-old boy at a street racing event in 2023, St. Petersburg police rounded up the boy’s father, the motorcyclist and the bike’s owner. All three men played a role in the teen’s death, police said. But shortly after the crash, the state decided not to prosecute two of them. Only the charges against Carlos Fernandez, who is accused of driving more than 100 mph when he struck Ethan Julio Martin, remain. His trial began this week.

Hillsborough County deputies are investigating a shooting at a Riverview intersection that left a man dead Tuesday. Dispatchers received a call about 3 p.m. reporting a possible shooting near the intersection of U.S. Highway 301 and Balm Riverview Road, according to a news release from the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies arrived to find a man with at least one gunshot wound to the upper body. He was taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead there.

St. Petersburg police are investigating the death of a woman found heavily decomposed at her Westminster Heights home. Officers responded for a wellness check reported by the woman’s landlord about 2:40 p.m. Monday in the 5000 block of Second Avenue South. After obtaining a warrant, police searched the home and found the 92-year-old woman dead underneath blankets on a bed.
