The Headwaters Rest Area near Three Forks was briefly closed last week. Travelers were notified of the closure by electronic signs on June 18. According to Montana Public Information Officer Charity Burns, the rest area was open again in the early afternoon on June 19. Burns said it was closed due to some issues with the reclaimed water system. The facility, located near the junction of I-90 and US 287, has been a contentious issue among area residents since 2021.

Around this time of year, I’m constantly reminded of some of the wonderful vacations I had during my childhood. There were always yearly trips to Jackson, Yellowstone, and the “Hoback” and several vacations in southern California, where I was able to go to Disneyland, Sea World, and Major League Baseball games.

Before Memorial Day, the Montana Highway Patrol reminded drivers to stay safe for the 100 Deadliest Days of Summer”, where there is an increase in fatalities and crashes in the Treasure State. With an increase in traffic during these “100 days” that will end with Labor Day, it can be a scary time to be on the roads, especially with the upcoming Fourth of July holiday, when many will be out and about recreating.

There is a new Middle School Principal in the Three Forks School District. At a meeting last week, the Three Forks School Board unanimously approved the hire of current employee Lisa Malmquist to fill the position left vacant after the resignation of Jake Lynch. Malmquist will also serve as the District's Children Services Director with a salary to be determined pending negotiations.

Each year, the Three Forks Masonic Lodge #73 encourages local students to read with their Bikes for Books program. At the recent conclusion of the 2024-25 school year, the Lodge awarded six bikes to Three Forks students. According to Lodge member Mel Hamilton, Bikes for Books is a statewide Masonic program. "For every book that they read, and it's approved by the librarian, they get their name in a hat. So, everybody has a chance to win a bike. If you read one book, you have one chance.

The Three Forks City Council voted last week to approve a resolution notifying the Gallatin County Election Administrator of its intent to hold a mail ballot election this fall. While the General Election will take place on Tuesday, November 4, it is still unclear what the ballot will look like. Gallatin County Election Administrator Eric Semerad told the Voice last week that there are still several scenarios of what could be on the ballot. Semerad said right now, there is just one contested race.

As I write this, things are finally starting to settle down from graduation. It was a wonderful time as family came in from Wyoming, Washington, California, and Nevada to celebrate Shayla on her special day. When it came time for the menu for the graduation party following the ceremony, I took the lead and was very nervous that I wouldn’t screw things up and the only thing people would have to eat was cake.

The review will take place under an accelerated 14-day environmental review process initiated after President Donald J. Trump declared a National Energy Emergency earlier this year.

Although it was so long ago, I can’t remember all the details; it was obviously a scam.
