Spring Hill headed to state title game

DALLAS — The Spring Hill Panthers are headed to the state championship game for the first time in school history. Landon Bartell went the distance on the mound for the Panthers, tossing a shutout, and Spring Hill (34-7) completed a sweep of Brock (30-5) in a Class 4A state semifinal series at Dallas Baptist University’s Horner Ballpark with a 2-0 win on Friday. The Panthers will meet Wimberly in the state championship game at 9 a.m. next Thursday at Dell Diamond in Round Rock.

AUSTIN - With a 21-0 pitching record heading into the Class 5A Division II state championship softball game, Sara Wiggins didn't need a lot of offensive help. She got it anyway, and Montgomery Lake Creek capped a perfect (37-0) season with a 12-1 win over the Hallsville Ladycats on Friday at Red & Charline McCombs Field. Hallsville, back in the state title game for the first time since the 2001 season, ends the year with a 36-6-1 record.

I mentioned to my lovely wife a few weeks back that eventually it would be nice to take a room in our house that has become a gathering place for stuff we don’t need (but refuse to throw away) and turn it into an office. Rachel loves me for reasons only she understands. She also loves a good challenge (it's possible the two are related), so within a few days the room that once looked like a garage sale starter kit became my office. I’m in awe of the job Rachel did with that old room.

Overton opens series with 8-5 win over Burton

HUNTSVILLE - Jayden Edwards and Rylan Holleman drove in two runs apiece, and the Overton Mustangs opened a Class 2A Division II state semifinal series with an 8-5 win over Burton on Wednesday at Sam Houston State University's Don Sanders Stadium. The Mustangs (30-6) will try to close out the series at 4 p.m. on Thursday. If Burton (23-11) wins Game 2, a third and deciding contest will follow. Holleman was all over the place for the Mustangs.
