Established in 1871 by independent publishers like James Hogg, who later became the governor of Texas, and civic leader Carl Estes from Longview, this publication was acquired by Cox Newspapers in the 1980s. In 2009, Cox sold it to ASP Westward. The publication has a strong connection with the Marshall News Messenger, another former Cox newspaper located in Marshall, which was also sold to ASP Westward alongside the News-Journal.
