ResourceAbilities is looking for great ideas from youth and young adults as part of a new grant program they are delivering called the DiverseAbility Project, and one of the first ideas to be funded should be a ball — literally. The microgrants of up to $1,500, using money from the province's Department of Workforce, Advanced Learning and Population, can be used for any kind of project that addresses social isolation, social exclusion and loneliness.

The P.E.I. Lifesaving Society and local swimmers are warning people not to underestimate the strength of rip currents this summer following a civilian rescue at Thunder Cove at the end of July. The lifeguard who performed the rescue declined to be interviewed out of respect for the person she saved, but said she felt there needed to be more awareness about rip currents — especially among tourists. Rip currents can be a challenge for even strong and experienced swimmers.

Local sheep breeders hope to make Prince Edward Island herds more resilient to parasites by introducing new breeds from the U.K. and New Zealand. Sheep are prone to parasitic infections caused by gastrointestinal nematodes, or roundworms. Almost all pastured sheep have them in their stomach. The nematodes can cause the animals to become ill and die, explained Andrew Peregrine, an expert in clinical parasitology with the Ontario Veterinary College at the University of Guelph.
