The underlying cause that Freedom Fest — the fireworks-filled Independence Day celebration at Fort Cavazos that has entertained local families for decades — won’t be happening this year may be a budget issue. After FME News Service broke the story early Monday morning that Freedom Fest was canceled, Fort Cavazos sent a statement from the post’s top leader, Lt. Gen Kevin D. Admiral.

With a new pool house in place, the city swimming pool at Long Branch Park in north Killeen is looking better than it has in decades. "What a splash! Thank you to everyone who joined us for the Long Branch Pool Ribbon Cutting and Pop-Up Pool Party! It was a perfect way celebrate our new pool house facility," city officials said in a social media post recently, along with photos of the pool and new pool house. The longtime city swimming pool closed during the 2022 season for repairs.
