CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - Young filmmakers from Charlottesville are using the power of storytelling to take on one of the world’s biggest challenges- climate change. The 3rd annual Climate Film Challenge returns to Vinegar Hill Saturday, April 19, as part of the Tom Tom Festival. The film screening is hosted by Light House Studio and the Community Climate Collaborative (C3) and will feature a wide range of films created by local students.

NELSON COUNTY, Va. (WVIR) - The Rockfish Wildlife Sanctuary in Nelson County says it’s prepared to welcome over a thousand new critters this baby season. Sarah Cooperman with the wildlife sanctuary says this time of year is peak baby season. She says it typically starts with a wave of baby squirrels, but shortly after you can expect to see baby raccoons, birds, and many others. Rockfish Wildlife Sanctuary specializes in treating healthy orphaned animals.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - Drivers in Virginia may start to notice signs advising them to slow down. The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles and the Virginia Department of Transportation have installed 300 bright yellow safety signs across the state’s rest stops. The signs display the message ‘Slow Down, Arrive Alive.’It’s part of a statewide initiative to raise awareness on speeding, promote safer driving, and reduce speed-related crashes. CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - UVA Health is the first in Virginia to use a new tool in the operating room that could improve outcomes for lung cancer patients. It’s called Cytalux, a prescription medication given to patients before surgery that causes cancerous tissue to glow under a special light. That glow helps surgeons identify and remove tumors that may be too small or hidden to spot with the naked eye, especially in harder-to-reach areas of the lungs.
