Unlike other North Pacific killer whales, Southern Resident killer whales have failed to thrive despite decades of conservation. Genomics combined with long-term observational records reveal inbreeding depression as a compelling explanation. Looming in tandem with climate change is a second alarming global threat — the extinction crisis1. Experts estimate around a third of species may be extinct or threatened by 2100, largely as a result of human impacts and climate change2.
