Extensive evidence (Ellis et al. 2021) verifies what many of these communities directly claim (Declaration of Belem 1988): that they are ancestrally responsible for the continued health of the places they live and revere.

As I wrote last week, I'm not expecting the federal budget to outline radical change to our aid program in the region. That will take time.
But what we can do is use the budget to modestly strengthen our regional influence.
There is no doubt in my mind that China is focussing on debt-trap funding....loans.....for infrastructure projects in the region. The latest is a highway in Samoa. It is also funding by way of a massive loan the Ramu Two Power Project In PNG.

It came as little surprise that the IMF has prescribed some tough medicine for Papua New Guinea.
The IMF has been very patient when it comes to economic and fiscal reform. The day of reckoning was inevitable though.
The toughest condition of the IMF's K3 billion loan to PNG is devaluation. Successive governments have long put that off.
The main consequence of a devaluation would be dearer imports. That would erode already low living standards.
Another is that taxes must be raised.

The Right Honourable Sir Rabbie Namaliu, who passed away suddenly on Friday would have been 76 today.
His passing leaves a huge void in my life. I worked for him from 1988 when he became Prime Minister until he retired from public life after losing his Kokopo electorate in 2007.
Even when he moved to the private sector I wrote his speeches etc.
I always say you can best be judged by what your toughest opponent says about you in life, not death.

The IMF has offered Papua New Guinea a loan of just under US $1 billion.
Government comment on it has been muted. The daily press has today revealed why.
The IMF has imposed some heavy conditions on its loan.
The toughest is that PNG must devalue the Kina...probably substantially.
There has been a reluctance from successive governments to entertain devaluation.
It would make imports dearer, and probably further lower living standards.

The largest majority in parliament in PNGs history has emboldened Prime Minister James Marape to propose quite radical political reform. So far it has not gone beyond being a proposal but there is every chance the PM will advance it.
He is to appoint 6 extra ministers. That is not radical but designed to further strengthen a huge majority.
I would expect two or three will be offered to the depleted opposition.
But his other proposal is radical.
