Michigan State University Extension has developed a poster that showcases photos of common apple pests and diseases alongside descriptions in both Spanish and English. Pests and diseases featured in this poster include codling moth, oriental fruit moth, obliquebanded leafroller, brown marmorated stink bug, plum curculio, apple maggot, woolly apple aphid, apple scab, powdery mildew and fire blight.

Fruit growers and other fruit industry professionals in the Great Lakes region are invited to participate in a short survey designed to gauge the current use and necessary improvements for the Fruit Pest and Beneficial Search Tool. The search tool can be used to identify diseases, insect and mite pests, and beneficial organisms on fruit farms, a critical step in any integrated pest management plan.

Michigan is a top producer of tart cherries in the United States, with 75% of the nation’s tart cherry acreage. Traditional tart cherry orchards are typically the Montmorency variety grown on Mahaleb rootstock, planted 19 feet by 21 feet. These traditional orchards result in very large trees that can remain productive up to 28 years, and they are harvested using a tree-shaking harvest method.
