    Most of the money from the 2022 round of emergency financial-aid grants through the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund, or HEERF, went to students of color and recipients of Pell Grants, according to new data from the U.S. Department of Education. Nationwide, institutions distributed $7.9 billion in emergency financial aid to students, either as direct grants or credits to their outstanding account balances, during the 2022 reporting cycle.
