The Palm Beach County Commission is considering a proposal for a rock mine near Lake Okeechobee. The project is being proposed by two Florida sugar companies, U.S. Sugar Corp. and Okeelanta Corp., better known as Florida Crystals, and is heavily opposed by several environmental groups, which say it’s a threat to future Everglades restoration projects.
