The owner of the embattled Genius childcare group has sold at least six centres to a company headed up by his former business partner. Genius has been in the spotlight for months after growing complaints about unpaid wages, landlord disputes, and child health and safety breaches. Steps Learning will take over six of the centres from early next week. Failed childcare boss Darren Misquitta has sold off a number of his Genius centres to a new company fronted by his former business partner.

A Canberra doctor has been accused of discrimination for cancelling a teenage transgender patient's GP appointment. The teenager, Sandy*, had booked into the GP to catch up on adolescent vaccinations she had missed while absent from school on days they had been administered. She had also been seeking a mental health plan and a possible referral to a new transgender health clinic that recently opened in the ACT.

The annual Summernats car festival has roared into Canberra with organisers promising this year's event will be "safe, well-managed, wild and vibey". It kicked off this afternoon with the City Cruise of more than 500 cars rumbling down Northbourne Avenue, drawing thousands of onlookers. Summernats' Andy Lopez described the convoy as the opening ceremony for the "festival of chrome and noise and rubber".

The Red Cross Lifeblood Service often experiences blood shortages over the holidays, but this year demand in Canberra is at a 12-year high. Lifeblood's Sally Deveson says to prevent shortages, more than 100 daily blood and plasma donors are needed in Canberra from now to January 2. Lifeblood's mobile donation centre will be in Garema Place until Christmas Eve, the permanent donor centre will be open on Christmas morning, and the plasma centre in Civic will operate every day except Christmas.
