Over 30 South Asian American constituents of Virginia’s 10th congressional district rallied in Ashburn on the evening of October 28 to protest candidate Suhas Subramanyam’s receipt of donations from out-of-state donors who are allegedly linked to support for Narendra Modi, the Hindu nationalist prime minister of India. Chants of “Suhas has got to go” rang out at Ashburn Park. “We cannot afford another Modi in Virginia,” said Pawan Singh of Leesburg at the rally.

The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), founded on September 27, 1925 by Keshav Baliram Hedgewar, a Maharashtrian brahmin, is the leader of the pack, known these days as the Sangh Parivar (Sangh family). In the mid-1990s, the RSS had 30,000 shakhas (branches), 2,500 pracharaks (propagandists) and could mobilize around three million volunteers.

Politically, results of Haryana and Jammu & Kashmir Assembly Elections may be viewed as significant from several angles. In case of Haryana polls, the instant reaction is that of these having defied many exit poll predictions, according to which Congress was expected to sweep the polls. In the recent Haryana Elections, the BJP appears to be defying all the exit polls, most of which predicted a significant Congress victory. Even before the final results were tallied, the BJP’s leads and wins show it has crossed the majority mark. This marks the party’s potential third consecutive win in the state—a unique feat, considering the challenges of long incumbency. Haryana seemed to be on the brink of the incumbency factor, which seemed to have the potential to turn the table.
