SANDSTONE, MINN. - The attached crampons scraped against the brittle ice and flailed into empty air. The ice tool slid free from the ice above me, leaving me dangling awkwardly. As a rock climber, I've hung from a rope in midair before. I've climbed dozens of walls, including Devil's Tower in Wyoming. I'm usually undaunted by heights, but I also usually rely on something permanent to hold me. Devil's Tower has been there for 10 million years. The ice I climbed in Sandstone was not there a week earlier.
