Amal and George Clooney made an appearance at New Theatre in Oxford as part of the Skoll World Forum annual summit last Friday. The couple discussed their work at the Clooney Foundation for Justice, storytelling, and the consequences and importance of speaking out against dictators and oppressive regimes. Amal Clooney, who is an alumna of St Hugh’s, is a barrister specialising in human rights cases.

A Bear’s Favour (niedźwiedzia przysługa) is a work-in-progress documentary made by six students from the University of Oxford, who sought to unpick the political climate in Poland. Since the fall of Communism in 1989, post-communist prosperity and living conditions drastically improved. In 2018, the Law and Justice Party (PiS), a right-wing political party, came, and things rapidly changed. Now, it has been argued that Polish political and humanitarian rights are eroding.

The High Commission of the Republic of Cyprus in the UK has expressed “serious concern and disappointment” with the presence of the elected leader of the Turkish occupied area of Cyprus, Ersin Tatar, at an event hosted by the Turkish Society. Concerns lie largely with language and symbols used to promote the event. On Monday, the Oxford University Turkish society hosted an event with Ersin Tatar, branded as “a talk by [the] President of [the] Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus,” the “TRNC”.

Leo Buckley has been elected Union President for Trinity Term 2023, narrowly edging-out opponent Julia Maranhao-Wong by three votes. The election saw a significantly higher voter turnout in recent memory and with more uncontested positions for the second term in a row. The two candidates for the presidency ran significantly different campaigns.

The Governing Body of Christ Church has approved a proposal to separate the responsibilities of the Dean into two roles, allowing non-clergy to head the College. In an email to students this morning, the College described the proposal as representing a “historic change for both the Cathedral and the College”. The proposal follows two internal tribunals against Very Rev Prof Martyn Percy, the College’s former Dean over pay and conduct concerns.
