Making beautiful noise sound like music is the challenge set out for Colfax-Mingo teacher Tyler Harper. In his first year at C-M, Harper teaches 306 general music and 7-12 choir at the junior-senior high school. “Kids are amazing,” Harper said. “I get to see them learn and grow over the years and be a little part of who they become. It is enormously rewarding in that aspect.”Harper isn’t new to teaching, he is in his 23rd year in the profession.

This isn’t the first time PCM Middle School science teacher Ashley Van Wyngarden has taught in the district. Van Wyngarden dipped her toes in teaching at PCM as an associate while it college before taking a full time position five years into her career. “I worked here as an associate and also subbed in most of the buildings, so PCM has felt familiar for quite some time,” Van Wyngarden said.

Spring City Pharmacy in Colfax is facing an uncertain future. The community staple is looking to local state legislators to pass legislation that will greatly benefit not only Spring City Pharmacy but all other pharmacies across Iowa. “Our biggest struggle is that a large portion of the prescriptions we (or any pharmacy) fill, the pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) pay us less than it costs us to buy the drugs,” Spring City Pharmacy owner Brad Magg said.

Almost 100 kids filled the Berg Middle School stage for the 2025 Jasper County Honor Band. Showing off their skills on musical instruments, the kids put on a show-stopping performance, no fooling, on April 1. The band was led by guest director Lynnville-Sully Middle School Band Director Brenna Hamborg. Students from all six county schools participated in the 51st edition of the honor band. “The students were awesome to work with. I had such a fun time working with all of them,” Hamborg said.

For the 32nd year, the Colfax Fire Department will hold its annual soup supper. Starting at 5 p.m. March 8, people will flood into the fire station excited to get their fill of tasty soup and yummy desserts all while helping a good cause. “The soup supper is the biggest fundraiser for the department,” Colfax Fire Fighter Dennis Lester said.
