Dry, summer weather, which is expected to sweep across the country into the weekend and early next week, is driving up pollen levels, according to the Met Office.

A 102-year-old Second World War veteran has said it was “amazing” to fly once again, after taking to the air in a 1930s Dragon Rapide plane. Arthur Clark, a former RAF pilot who served in India and Singapore with the 2896 squadron formed in 1942, was surprised by his care home in Chingford, east London, with a visit to Classic Wings at Duxford in Cambridge for the special flight on May 10.

A “once-in-a-lifetime” collection of Bernard Leach pottery which had been destined for a charity shop after being found gathering dust in a cupboard has sold for £13,000 at auction. Born in Hong Kong, Leach founded Leach Pottery in Cornwall in 1920 after spending a decade in Japan developing his interest in ceramics. Potters from all over the world were apprenticed at Leach Pottery and learned from his utilitarian style and belief in functional forms.

Sunny spells are set to replace wet and windy weather as the week draws to a close, the Met Office said. Thunderstorms have swept much of the country in the past few days, with more forecast for Scotland on Wednesday bringing as much as 40mm of rain and a risk of flooding. But by Thursday the UK will see a mix of sun and showers until high pressure from the western coast of England will help “slowly kill” off the rain in time for the weekend.
