The parents of a young girl have spoken of their gratitude to ambulance staff who saved their daughter’s life after she choked on a chicken nugget on Christmas Eve. Barry and Heather Rodgers, of Cambuslang, South Lanarkshire, were at home with their four-year-old daughter Amelia preparing for Christmas when the near-tragedy happened. Earlier in the evening they had stopped at a restaurant to buy dinner for Amelia, who has autism. Mr Rodgers said: “She couldn’t breathe and lost consciousness.

A number of people have been injured after a bus was involved in a three-vehicle collision in Argyll and Bute. Emergency services were alerted to the crash on Tuesday afternoon just outside of Lochgilphead. An eyewitness told STV News the bus, which was travelling between Campbeltown and Glasgow, was seen lying on its side. Police confirmed a “number of people” have been taken to hospital following the crash.

A childhood thank-you letter written by King James VI of Scotland aged seven is to go on show later this month as part of a new exhibition. In the letter, the first known to have been written by King James, he thanks his guardian’s wife, the Countess of Mar, for sending him fruit. It will be on display as part of The World Of King James VI & I exhibition which opens at National Galleries Scotland: Portrait in Edinburgh on April 26.

A pair of critically endangered Galapagos tortoises who are almost 100 years old have become first-time parents. Philadelphia Zoo said it was “overjoyed” at the arrivals of the four hatchlings, a first in its more than 150-year history. The babies are the offspring of female Mommy, who arrived at the zoo in 1932, and male Abrazzo, the zoo’s two oldest residents. The hatchings will make their public debut on April 23, which is the 93rd anniversary of Mommy’s arrival at the zoo.
