I was sitting at my favorite coffee shop on Sixth Street drinking espresso the other day watching a young woman counseling a man who was obviously in a recovery diversion program. I only caught a bit of their conversation as I wasn’t trying to eavesdrop but I did notice the interactions–engaged conversation with some empathy.

I was having lunch at the San Pedro Brewing Company next to a couple of longshoremen at the bar. Never being one to shy away from controversial topics, our conversation drifted over to automation and trade tariffs. One of them tells me he used to vote liberal but has changed in the last 20 years. I asked if robots and trade politics would change his mind about the Orange Felon and he said, “I doubt it. I probably won’t be around to see complete automation.

I have often been asked over the years by various people, “Just how did you get into journalism?” The answer: It was a long and circuitous route that started when I was just 14 years old. I started publishing the only off campus, unauthorized, student newspaper on mimeographed paper and distributed surreptitiously so I wouldn’t be expelled from school. That was against the rules at that time. I’ve always been a rebel with a cause and it started early in my life and apparently, it’s never stopped.
