April was a momentous month in the American Civil War. On April 9, 1865, Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered his army to General Ulysses Grant, commander of the Union forces at Appomattox Court House in Virginia, marking the culmination of the war. Over the next two months, the remaining Confederate troops were defeated and surrendered by the end of May.
