CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Dollar Tree is selling Family Dollar to a pair of private equity firms for $1 billion after a decade trying to make its acquisition of the bargain chain fit. Dollar Tree Inc. acquired Family Dollar for more than $8 billion in 2015 after a bidding war with rival Dollar General, but struggled to make it fit. In 2018, Dollar Tree announced it would close the Family Dollar corporate headquarters in Matthews, NC. The closure resulted in the loss of 900 jobs.

RALEIGH, N.C. — North Carolina Gov. Josh Stein announced his state budget proposal on Wednesday. This is Stein's first two-year budget proposal. It would fund the state through 2027 with $33.6 billion for the first year and $34.3 billion for the second year. Both years would have the biggest budgetary portion going toward education with roughly $19 million suggested. He said that includes raising teacher pay, offering free breakfast for students, and keeping cell phones out of classrooms.
