Nearly half a million Americans received an unpleasant surprise this summer, according to insurance billing data: a new diagnosis of Lyme disease. Those numbers could shrink if scientists succeed in developing a vaccine for the tick-borne illness. Low consumer demand scuppered a previous vaccine in the 1990s, but the situation is very different now. Cases of Lyme have exploded.

U.S. health officials say more than 20 people returning to the U.S. from Cuba had been infected with a virus transmitted by bugs. They all had Oropouche virus disease, also known as sloth fever. U.S. health officials are warning doctors to be alert for dengue cases as the tropical disease breaks international records. Dengue is spread by mosquitoes and it has been surging worldwide, helped by climate change. The virus remains less common in the continental United States, but in the 50 states so far this year there have been three times more cases than at the same point last year. Most were infections that travelers got abroad.

However, that time frame isn’t an exact science. Ticks are warm-weather creatures, and there’s a chance that they can come out of the woods whenever there’s a warmer-than-usual day during the winter, according to experts.
